There's one mantra when it comes to packing: Pack light, or carry the consequences.
Rick Steves makes that point loud and clear in his latest article. He suggests packing no more than 20 pounds in a carry-on size bag measuring 9 inches by 14 inches by 22 inches—regardless if you're traveling for three weeks or three months.
Packing that light may feel like a heavy burden, but the advice is worth its weight in gold.

Don't Forget Your Toothbrush is more or less the ultimate travel checklist site. It's more than a packing list (although it's good for that, too). You create custom lists of things to do to prepare for your trip and things to not forget to bring on your trip (like your toothbrush). Then you can receive emails reminding you of things to do. And, of course, it's free!

Gadling wrote about it last month, it's twice been named Website of the Day by the BBC, and Time magazine just named it No. 7 on its list of Top 10 Websites in 2007.

In case you travel with your cell phone, laptop or other electronic devices with lithium batteries, heed the new rules from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Effective Jan. 1, the DOT is not allowing passengers to pack spare lithium batteries in their checked baggage. You can fly with spare batteries, but they must be in your carry-on. For specific details, check out the DOT's Safe Travel site and the Associated Press story on the new battery regulations.
